Started at the University of Maryland in 2004, Engineers Without Borders is a national organization that was established in April 2000 at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Over 70 chapters now exist, and each year they travel to foreign countries to implement engineering solutions in indigent villages.

In addition, we strive to forge long-term relationships with our partner communities, and aim to empower them to drive change themselves. 2021-1-29 · In January 2011, the UM Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Ethiopia project team returned to the town of Addis Alem to assess the feasibility of a sustainable stream-crossing project. Each year, Addis Alem has a period of heavy rainfall between the months of June and August that contributes to the flooding of their local stream.

Engineers Without Borders This weekend, the University of Maryland Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-UMCP) attended the Engineers Without Borders National Conference in Reston, Va. The chapter representatives joined EWB professionals, mentors, and students from across the country looking to expand their knowledge and skills related to community-driven development. On Aug. 1, 2015, a team of five students and one advisor from the University of Maryland chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-UMD) traveled to Suma Ahenkro, Ghana, to install the first part of a 3 kW photovalic power system to improve access to electricity for Sumaman Senior High School.

EWB-UMD has officially adopted its first project as a chapter: Nyansakia, Kenya is part of the "Great Lakes Region" of Kenya. The community here does not have access to clean water, and at certain times of the year, there is not enough water to go around. Our goal is to bring clean water to the community year-round.
