Lönnrot kokosi Kalevalan runoista, jotka hän oli kerännyt matkoiltaan. Kalevala kertoo suomalaisten muinaisista ajoista, Kalevalan ja Pohjolan väestä. Kalevalan ensimmäinen osa ilmestyi vuonna 1835. Kalevalaa kutsutaan Suomen kansalliseepokseksi. Kalevalan jälkeen Lönnrot julkaisi muun muassa uuden kirjan kansanrunoista: Kantelettaren. Elias Lönnrot syntyi Sammatissa 1802 räätäli Fredrik Johan Lönnrotin ja hänen vaimonsa Ulrikan neljänneksi lapseksi, sisarussarjaansa keskimmäiseksi. 1800-luvulla ei ollut helppoa saada koulusivistystä, mutta poikkeuksellisen suurten lukuhalujen ja suosijoiden ansiosta se onnistui Lönnrotilta.
